About Belarus

Belarus Belarus (formerly the Belorussian Soviet Socialist Republic of the USSR, and then Byelorussia) is a hilly lowland with forests, swamps, and numerous rivers and lakes. There are wide rivers emptying into the Baltic and Black seas. Its forests cover over one-third of the land and its peat marshes are a valuable natural resource. The largest lake is Narach, 31 sq mi (79.6 sq km).

Minsk city is the capital of Belarus. It is the political, economic, scientific and cultural center of the country and the administrative center of the Minsk region.

Minsk is the most economically developed city in Belarus. There are 1.901,1 million inhabitants in Minsk, and the population is constantly growing.

Transportation network in Minsk

Minsk is located on the main transportation routes connecting Western Europe and the East, regions of the Black Sea coast and the Baltic States.

Highways connect Minsk with the largest cities in Belarus: Orsha, Vitebsk, Molodechno, Brest, Slutsk, Mogilev and Gomel.

Minsk has a large railway network which connects Brest, Moscow, Vilnius and Gomel. There is a national airport in the capital.

The city has a very good public transportation system. You can easily reach any place by bus, trolleybus or tram. Minsk, like most big European cities, has a fine metro system.

Minsk is a large educational center within Belarus. The main educational institutions of the country, including lyceums, high schools and colleges, are concentrated in Minsk. A system of educational values, which has a direct impact on the national identity, is cultivated not only within the family, but also by the educational system. Historically, the very point of universities has been that they were created for students. If not for the students, universities would not exist. In view of the current education system in Belarus, the majority of young people come to universities for anything but high quality education.

Approximately 130 foreign citizens are engaged in post-graduate courses at Belarusian research institutions and institutions of higher learning every year. The low costs of tuition, textbooks, accommodations and transportation, as well as the high quality of academic education, international recognition of Belarusian diplomas, a stable political situation and low crime rate are just some of the reasons that foreign students are attracted to Belarus. Annually, about 3,000 students from over 70 countries (China, Ghana, Somali, Syria, Sudan, Pakistan, Turkmenistan, Sri Lanka, India, Maldives, Nigeria, Cameroon, Angola, and more) study in the Republic. Foreign students are offered a year’s preparatory Russian language course.

Universities place free sports facilities and libraries at the students’ disposal which encourages their creative activities. After university graduation, young specialists have an opportunity to continue postgraduate education. Here, training of the scientific personnel with highest qualifications is conducted with granting scientific degrees of Candidate of Science. Establishments providing postgraduate education include higher educational establishments (regardless of pattern of ownership), scientific and other organizations entitled to engage in postgraduate education in accordance with established procedure.

visa process

All international students who arrived to study in Belarus must register their international passports with Belarussian visas and migration cards at the Department of International Relations at the University.

  • At the Passport-Visa Department a student is registered at the address of one of the student dormitories of the University, where a student is given accommodation by his/her faculty. In case a student refuses the lodgings the student must be registered at the actual address providing the necessary documents proving that the student studies in Belarus: the contract signed with the University, the document of payment for the studies, admission certificate, student certificate and other papers on demand of the Passport-Visa Department.
  • The contract concerning services provided by the University is prepared by a certain department which defines the quantity of academic hours, the costs of the services, the terms, and other. The originals of all the documents are kept in the personal files of international students at the International Relations department of the University.
  • International students must provide the International Relations Department of the University with exact and definite personal information.
  • International students must buy a medical Insurance policy valid on the territory of Belarus. In case a student has his/her own personal reasons not to acquire such a policy or has a foreign medical assurance policy, the student must refuse to acquire a policy in written form and agree to cover all the expenses of medical services during his/her stay in the Republic of Belarus.
  • 14 days before the expiry date of the registration in the city indicated in the passport, international students must prolong the period of its validity if the Chair of their faculty confirms that the student is determined to continue studying at the University.
  • In case an international student needs to leave Belarus for a certain period of time or forever and cannot do this with the available visa He/she must inform the International Relations Department of the University about it one month before leaving the country.
  • All the documents necessary for entering/leaving the country are submitted 20 days before the day of entering/leaving for a holiday period and only on a written agreement of the Faculty Dean.
  • On returning back to Belarus after holidays students must inform the International Relations department within 1-2 days, bring their passport and the migration card there to do registration at the Passport-Visa Department.
  • Students must change the national passports in their countries 1-2 months before the expiry date and must inform the International Relations department about it immediately.
  • On receiving a new national passport back in their country the student must have in registered together with the migration card at the International Relations department within 1-2 days after entering the country.
  • When visiting other cities of the Republic of Belarus students must inform the International Relations department of the University about it.
  • Finishing the studies at the University students must receive a leaving visa 20 days before the departure.

Some Universities in Belarus offer accommodation to students at the university. For on campus accommodation, the fee is determined in accordance with the school order and the costs may vary from time to time. Off Campus accommodation depends on the part of the Belarus the student resides and so there is no specific amount to that.

Most Universities have hostels that can accommodate as many people as possible and offers opportunity for students to have everything necessary for life, study and rest. Rooms for two and for three persons are grouped into blocks. There is a separate bathroom and a refrigerator in each block. There is a kitchen with electric cookers on each floor. There is an independent-study room, a student café, a library, a social and educational assistance center. And in most of these hotels there are separate internet access rooms for students. However, with the increasing number of International students yearly, many students might have to live off campus because of inadequate space.

What accommodation is available for foreign students?

All colleges and universities in Belarus have an accommodation department, which can help you get a residence permit and find lodgings. Most students live in student hostels, which cost around 15-50 USD per month.

With foreign students is somewhat different contract. In particular there is no point to raise tuition fees in connection with the growth of wages in Belarus. The last increase tuition fees by 30% in no way affect international students.

Suitable accommodations are arranged for the students upon their arrival in Belarus. The university provides residential hostels within walking distance of the academy. Living conditions in the hostels are standard, with 2 to3 students sharing rooms with central heating and hot water systems. Students are provided with a common kitchen with a free supply of gas and/or electricity. Those who are interested in more modern facilities can ask our counselors for a price list for the better hostel facilities.

Belarusian climate is moderately continental, with temperatures in July ranging from +17 C to +18.5 C, and January temperatures varying from −8 C to −4.5 C.
